Nisab is a threshold, not an allowance
A common misunderstanding: once your net wealth reaches the nisab, zakat of 2.5% is due on the whole of it, not merely on the amount above the threshold. The nisab decides whether you pay, not how much of your wealth is counted.

Frequently asked questions
- How is zakat calculated?
- Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, assessed once a lunar year. Add up your cash, gold and silver, investments, recoverable receivables and business stock, subtract debts that are currently due, and if the result reaches the nisab you pay 2.5% of the whole amount.
- What is nisab and why does this calculator ask me for it?
- Nisab is the minimum wealth at which zakat becomes payable, traditionally the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because it tracks metal prices, it changes every year and the State Bank of Pakistan announces a figure before Ramadan. We ask you for it rather than shipping a value, so you are never calculating against a stale threshold.
- Do I pay zakat only on wealth above the nisab?
- No, and this is the most common error. Nisab determines whether zakat is due at all. Once your net wealth reaches it, 2.5% is payable on the entire amount, not just the excess over the threshold.
- Is my house or car subject to zakat?
- No. Assets held for personal use — your home, your car, household goods, clothing — are not zakatable. Zakat applies to wealth held as wealth: cash, precious metals, investments, and goods held for trade. Property bought as an investment to resell is generally treated as trade stock.
- Which debts can I deduct?
- Liabilities that are currently due — outstanding bills, overdue payments, short-term borrowing. The treatment of long-term debt such as a mortgage is a matter of scholarly difference; the common view is to deduct only the instalments due within the year rather than the whole outstanding balance.
- Is zakat the same as the tax deducted by my bank?
- Banks in Pakistan deduct zakat at source from certain savings accounts under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, unless you have filed a declaration of exemption. That deduction counts towards your obligation, so keep the certificate and subtract what has already been taken when deciding what remains to pay.
What counts as zakatable wealth
Zakat is charged on wealth held as wealth, not on what you use. Cash and bank balances, gold and silver at current market value, shares and investments, money genuinely recoverable from others, and stock held for trade all count. Your home, car and personal possessions do not, however valuable.
Why we will not guess the nisab
The nisab is pegged to the value of gold or silver, so it moves with metal prices and is reset annually. A calculator that hard-codes last year’s figure will quietly tell some people they owe nothing when they do. We would rather ask you for the current figure than give you a confidently wrong answer about a religious obligation.
The State Bank of Pakistan announces a nisab before Ramadan each year, and it is widely reported. You may also compute it yourself from the market value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver — note that the silver basis gives a lower threshold, and so brings more people into zakat, which many scholars prefer for that reason.
A note on scope
This calculator handles the arithmetic, which is the easy part. Questions of what to include, how to treat long-term debt, pensions, jointly held assets or a business in which you are a minority partner are matters of fiqh rather than arithmetic, and they attract genuine scholarly disagreement. For anything complicated, ask someone qualified.
